Inclusive prosperity indicators

DMPED is creating an inclusive prosperity dashboard — a manageable set of metrics that collectively define and help monitor inclusive prosperity in DC. The indicators were developed with input from DC residents, businesses, government data managers, and community organizations with the guidance of researchers from the Urban Institute. Over the next six months, DMPED will acquire the data necessary to build out the dashboard and continue to collect input on the indicators.

Progress Updates:

January 2020: Updated indicators on inclusive prosperity dashboard. New data shows:

  • Private sector GDP rose to $94.4 billion in 2018, indicating that DC is on track to meet the goal of $100 billion by the end of 2021.
  • Unemployment is decreasing in Wards 7 and 8, and Ward 7 unemployment is consistently falling below the 10% threshold.
  • DC government SBE spending has increased by approximately 87% since FY15. See Green Book 2020 report for more information.
  • The number of patents issued to DC residents increased by 25% from 2015 to 2018.
  • The Media, Communications, and Information industry experienced a 15% increase in the number of jobs from 2017 to 2018.
    • September 2018: Released updated inclusive prosperity dashboard, a set of metrics that collectively define and help monitor inclusive prosperity in DC.  New 2017 data show increases in educational attainment and household income for African-American residents.
